Join us as we connect you with local restaurants, farms, ranches, markets, and artisanal makers, all dedicated to bringing you responsibly-sourced, delicious, nourishing offerings.
Our name doesn't ellude to any shiny new food innovations. Rather, it brings us back to a much simpler time. It's a salute to the way we approached food from days of old.
When food had soul. When we knew the farmer, butcher, or milkman by name. When we ate with the seasons and when clean, nutritious ingredients were the only option. When deep connections were forged at the market, in the kitchen, and around the dining table.
Even in today's turbulent sea of food choices, this ethos is still very much alive in businesses across our communities! We're here to shine a light on them.
As humans, we love to look at (or for) a problem and think, “Hey, this could use a shiny new solution”. The food industry has been particularly adept at this. These new industry trends are marketed as a net positive (healthier, more ethical or convenient), while in reality they are usually clever tactics to boost company profits. Whether you realize it or not, you've seen these in action:
How it is marketed
cheaper
convenient
healthier
ethical
Fast Food
Shelf Stable
Pasteurization
"Free Range"
"Vegetable" Oil
"Fat-Free"
"Heart-healthy"
Keto
"Plant-based"
"Zero Calorie"
Year-round produce
We're just scratching the surface here, and the complexity of all of this can quickly become overwhelming. We spent a lot time doing the dirty detective work and take it from us, you don't need to head down that dark path!
Thankfully, we resurfaced from that bleak reality with a fresh perspective. We now had a better understanding of the problem, but attempting to “overhaul our broken food system” is wildly unrealistic. Whatever we decided to build it needed to be practical and uplifting, a solution that contributes positively to the world, not more of the doom and gloom that our newsfeeds have been inundated with.
So, if all of the shiny new innovations are the problem, what's the actual solution?
✨ Just look in the opposite direction. ✨
Instead of chasing the latest and greatest, we turn to the more humble, yet effective, time-tested solutions and a mindset of “simplicity is sophistication.” Yes, this requires more effort and comes at a higher upfront cost, but we believe it holds the key to genuinely transforming our relationship to our food system, communities, ecosystems, and health.
This means promoting:
Local
Ingredient Quality
Transparency
Ethical Sourcing
Regenerative Agriculture
Human Connection
Ecosystem Health
Community
Craftsmanship
Seasonality
Nutrient-Density
Nose-to-Tail
Chemical-Free
Minimal Processing
Artisanry
Heritage Breeds & Seeds
Ultimately this means focusing on the family farms, restaurants, and vendors who are tired of the current status quo, consistently pushing to do better, and are consciously taking the charge towards creating a more hopeful, holistic food future.
But these businesses are facing some major headwinds:
Tight budgets and low margins
Consumers who are led (marketed) in the wrong direction
Perception that their products are priced at a steep premium
Doing things “the right way” is almost always less efficient
Staying in business versus upholding integrity
Competing against global foreign imports
Small high-quality driven businesses tend to struggle with:
Effective marketing
Less streamlined logistics
Cost disparities
Competing against scale
Economic swings
Labor costs
So what are we trying to achieve?
Our Mission
Empowering a shift towards a food system rooted in locality, community, quality, and transparency.
We're here to empower consumers with the knowledge of where to make better food decisions and why we think that matters. As for the hardworking folks behind these businesses, we're here to spread their stories and show off the sweat, craftsmanship, passion, and love that goes into what they do best.
To our users, our goal here is to provide resources and education rather than to belittle or scare you into eating or behaving in a certain way (like many corners of the internet nowadays).
You may be wondering, “What criteria qualifies a business to be listed here?” Simply said, we're not in the game of defining a strict rubric or rating system. Everyone has their own flavor and as long as they are open and transparent, we're here to support them. Our focus is on fostering relationships with those who embrace our core values:
Our Core Values
Honesty and Integrity
Upholding honesty, integrity, and good intentions in all actions.
Land Stewardship
A commitment to farming practices that nurture and enrich the local ecosystems.
Health Over Profit
Placing customer and animal health above financial gains.
Unwavering Transparency
Offering clear insight into sourcing and practices to customers.
Honoring Our Roots
Learning from the past while looking towards the future.
Community Cultivation
Fostering strong, supportive relationships and growth within our local food communities.

đź‘‹ Â Hey, I'm Jake! I'm deeply passionate about good food, grown the right way by honest people and whenever possible, enjoyed with great company. However, rewind back 6 years and you'd find me blissfully ignorant to the effects of my food choices and the issues facing our food landscape.
Over these past years, though, I've found myself on a transformative health journey which, with many unexpected twists and turns, has led me to discover a passion for honest quality food and how it gets on our plate. This journey inspired the creation of Food Done Better.
